“The show uses music and creates comical characters that are hilarious and captivating to watch. The text of poets and Shakespeare doesn’t dwindle the humour in the show. I applaud Eva Barrie for using such texts in a refreshing way.”

My Co-Mates & Brothers in Exile (2016)

Created by Eva Barrie & Ensemble
Directed by Eva Barrie

For the first time, Shakespeare in The Ruff traveled outside our home of Withrow Park to perform in The Walter Saunders Memorial Park in North York. My Co-Mates & Brothers in Exile was a brand-new, site-specific, comedic, promenade piece that wove together Shakespearean text with touches from contemporary female poets such as Margaret Atwood, Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath, Simin Behbahani and Ishrat Afreen. The story followed Sappho, a young woman forced to leave her war-torn country, as she lands in Toronto and begins to make a new home.

This show was made possible by the Toronto Art Council’s Arts in the Parks Initiative.
