For the past five years, Shakespeare in the Ruff has been invited into schools, community centres, and assisted living facilities to offer a variety of workshops and performances.
“By working with [Shakespeare in the Ruff], students not only got a more personal grasp on Shakespeare’s words, they benefited from the experience the actors had accumulated in their own theatrical journeys. I found their approach to working with the students refreshing, and their ability to connect with my students created an environment where they could take risks and try things they had found intimidating.”Shawn RocheleauHead of Drama, Middlefield Collegiate, Markham
They have included sessions in:
- Playing with Shakespeare’s Language
- Stage Combat: both hand to hand & with weaponry
- Introduction to Puppetry
Last spring, Ruff also paid a visit to Morgan Holmes’ English class, at The University of Toronto, which you can read about here.

Throughout the run of our summer production, we partner with local community groups, such as Withrow’s Farmer’s Market and the Friends of Withrow Park, to hold a series of intimate, hands-on, free family workshops. We explore the themes of our production through game playing and active participation. These workshops are designed to help make our shows more accessible to people of all ages.
