Schools & Community

For the past five years, Shakespeare in the Ruff has been invited into schools, community centres, and assisted living facilities to offer a variety of workshops and performances. They have included sessions in:

  • Playing with Shakespeare’s Language

  • Stage Combat: both hand to hand & with weaponry

  • Introduction to Puppetry

“Having Shakespeare in the Ruff teaching artists in my classroom made an incredible impact on my students. By working with these emerging artists, students not only got a more personal grasp on Shakespeare’s words, they benefited from the experience the actors had accumulated in their own theatrical journeys. I found their approach to working with the students refreshing, and their ability to connect with my students created an environment where they could take risks and try things they had found intimidating. I have been happy to work with Ruff both in my classroom and in the community, and I recommend them to any educator who wants a refreshing take on performing Shakespeare.”

  • Shawn Rocheleau, Head of Drama, Middlefield Collegiate, Markham

Last spring, Ruff also paid a visit to Morgan Holmes’ English class, at The University of Toronto, which you can read about here.

Rates for workshops are available upon request, so please be in touch with any queries, as our programs are flexile and can be tailored to specific plays or learning needs. Email us at info@shakespeareintheruff.com.

Family Workshops

Throughout the run of our summer production, we partner with local community groups, such as Withrow’s Farmer’s Market and the Friends of Withrow Park, to hold a series of intimate, hands-on, free family workshops. We explore the themes of our production through game playing and active participation. These workshops are designed to help make our shows more accessible to people of all ages.

“…all of the exercises were appropriate & did a good job of touching on major themes of the play. It was great that the kids were given opportunities to demonstrate their creative choices.”  -L. Reedy

“The workshop was fantastic. We will definitely do it again, and also come out to see your production. It was magical.” – N. Kenny

Shakespearean Masterclass for Actors (3 days in the Winter, annually)

Every year, Ruff hosts one of Canada’s premiere classical actors to lead a three day Shakespearean Acting Intensive. These classes book up very quickly and have proven a very effective way of getting the audition season off to a great start. Past teachers are Seana McKenna (2016), Chick Reid & Tom McCamus (2015), Diane D’Aquila (2013 & 2014), and Jeffrey Wetsch (2014). We announce our Masterclass in late November.
