The Garden Initiative is Shakespeare in the Ruff’s new outreach program for young parents under 22 years of age. An evolution of our Young RUFFian Apprenticeship Program (established in 2012), The Garden Initiative exposes young people facing barriers to theatre, creation, and community in the arts.

Garden participants may attend theatre performances, explore art galleries, or take workshops in writing, design, or performance throughout the year.

In the summer we will invite participants into a week-long creative residency with Shakespeare in the Ruff, observing rehearsals for our mainstage performance in Withrow Park and learning about what goes into making a play – creativity, collaboration, and community. Participants receive an honorarium, on-site childcare, transit fare, and food.
